  • About the work of Victor Deryughin
Victor Deryughin is a well-known Moscow-based artist-portrayer who has behind him the solid academic artistic education and any years of practical experience. He takes part in many art shows. The masters works enjoy the intense demand by the clientele. His portraits are in museums and private collections in Russia as well as abroad.
The artist adheres to the classical tradition based on the aesthetics of the Antiquity and the Renaissance and relies on the academic painting and drawing school in his work and mastery.
The Russian Classicism of the 30-50s of the 19th century, with its most prominent members being O Kiprensky, C Brullov and the founder of the Moscow school of art V Tropinin, is the artistic realm that is the closest to Victor Deryughin creativity-wise.
The Russian roots of the master are manifest in the inclination to the aesthetic culture of the Ancient Rus with its innate understanding of the spiritual function of the art and the accustomedness to the symbolic and positive attitude to the depicted objects. This is why the artist seeks so actively that elevated element in the humans when he paints his heroes at the best moments of their lives and thus communicates their ability to feel and their drive for the spiritually enriched life. It appears as though Victor Deryughin always keeps before his minds eye the elevated human ideal with its divine spiritual predetermination.
His portraits have no special internal commotion but then they are at ease, calm and sometimes quite homely. The artist takes and communicates with the great spontaneity the characteristics of his models and their environments. His works show the interest in the specific things that surround his model, the models clothes and the exact moment that is captured in the portrait eventually.
At the same time, the portraits by Victor Deryughin have the high artistic values: the gentle modelling of volumes and shapes accompanied with the tonal unity does not prevent the artist from seeing and generating the value of the independent colour qualities and the beauty of textures.
E very portrait by the master is unique in its artistic quality. The paints are relate to canvas in thin transparent layers using the scumbling technique the same one that the great masters of the Renaissance and Classicism epochs like Rembrandt, Rubens and Poussin used in their time.
The frames that the artist uses, too, bring us back to the excellence of the old masters. The frames are normally the heavy, plastered and gilded bagnettes.
Victor Deryughins interest in special environment in which his portraits characters dwell initiates plot relations with the genre of easel painting. Hence, many of his images show inclination to the very different household, historical, battle and other plots. The plot composition and the portrait are moving towards each other but though the artist activates the genre-based character building he never destroys the portrait basis. The genre fusion is the logical outcome and expression of the main creative interests of the artist that are especially vividly manifested in the group portrait compositions.
Even though Victor Deryughin specialises in portraits, his creative talent permits him progress in other artistic realms including landscape painting, still lives and easel painting. Some of his works also display the authors talent of a decorator.
Though staying true to the Classical traditions is the motto of the artist, his talents lets him conquer various styles; for instance, he is assimilating the currently trendy interior painting (the portraits and paintings of other genres intended to fit into the specific interior harmoniously) and showing off his excellent styling capacities as well as the fact that many artistic styles are an open book for him.
Victor Deryughin is an artist who first of all takes care to ensure that each of his portraits or other paintings should be interesting to the customer as well as to himself as a creative person. The viewer will never ever see one work resembling another in form or in artistic contents.
The artist experiments constantly; he seeks new images and solutions, or he changes the array and arrangement, or he uses different clothes and costumes, interiors and canvas dimensions.
The creative legacy of Victor Deryughin is huge in spite of his relatively young age. This legacy still waits to be interpreted by art historians. There is a surety as to the artists going on to occupy a well-deserved place in the history of the Russian arts of the 21st century.
